Nothin new

The next post will probably have pictures...

I've been to classes this week. I did laundry. I've been considering a new dissertation topic on two similar plays, both by contemporary Irish play wrights. Dancing at Lughnasa is by Brian Friel and he's written a play based in the 1930s mainly about 5 sisters, never married, as told by the grown up Michael, who was the one son born to one of the sisters. The other is The Mai by Marina Carr, which is another story of women told by the grown up Millie, the daughter of the main woman, based in 1980. So we could see the male narrator's memories of the women as compared to the female's memories of the women. I havent read The Mai completely yet, so I'm not sure what angle I would take, but they are similar plays written from different perspectives, and as a possible bonus, as both play wrights are current (meaning not dead...) then I could possibly meet them and interview them. My theatre prof Melissa is basically best friends with Marina Carr and knows very well Brian Friel, so that's not an impossible idea of meeting them... I dont know... we'll see how that goes.

At this point I'm waiting on Melissa's feedback on this possible thesis idea and thinking ahead to the trip I will be taking this weekend to Poland. LeeAnn and I will leave on Sunday and return to Dublin on Tuesday. Poland appears to be very cold this weekend so we'll see if my camera doesnt freeze over, possibly coming back with pictures :)

I thought about Tim today being down in Key West. Today was your typical "Irish" day. Cold. Rainy. Gray. When you think of Irish weather, this is it. I was talking to some of my classmates about Jimmy Buffett - and Karla from Limerick had no idea who I was talking about - and about how warm Tim must be now that he's Jimmy. It wasn't the coldest day, but it wasn't super pleasant either...
Riding home on the bus, I put Jimmy on my ipod and started listening to the song Boat Drinks. 'I gotta go where it's warm!'

  1. Hi Kerry,
Loved the video of Joseph walking. Today was the first time my computer would actually play it. When Charlie heard your voice on the video, he ran out of the office and started barking! He's still looking for you :)

I laughed about what you said about Tim being Jimmy Buffett. He has actually lined up quite a few gigs down there in the Keys! Yesterday I watched "Burn Notice" - which I don't see that often - and a girl was telling about the time their boat capsized in the Carribean and they had to swim to the Keys. She said they ended up getting drunk at Sloppy Joes, which is in Key West - and we just ate there three days ago!!

Hope the grey skies turn blue again, soon (especially by the time we come to visit at the end of next month!).

  2. Have a great time in Poland! Awesome! I hope you get some photos--I want to see what Poland looks like! :)

We are having a typical "Irish" day here too--Cold, Rainy and Gray---feel like I'm in MI(well, michigan in the Fall--MI in February is much more white and way more cold!)....the only difference is that MI didn't give me a stupid migraine everytime it rained! :(

Enjoy and be safe on your trip! Can't wait to hear all about it!
